O.J. Mayo

O.J. Mayo

Unics Kazan (VTB) agreed terms with 33-year old American guard O.J. Mayo (193cm-100kg-87, college: USC) for upcoming 2021-22 season. Mayo played last season at Liaoning Flying Leopards in Chinese CBA league. In 56 games he had very impressive stats: 19.6ppg, 4.8rpg, 2.9apg and 1.4spg. He helped them to make it to the Chinese CBA final after they ended regular season as second best team. 2020-21 was a great year as he was named to All-Chinese CBA 2nd Team and League Player of the Week.
In 2008 he was drafted by Minnesota Timberwolves (NBA) as #3 pick overall. Mayo attended University of Southern California and it will be his 14th (!!!) season in pro basketball.
He is quite experienced player. Mayo has played in four different countries on three different continents (Asia, Latin America and of course North America). He has played previously professionally also in Puerto Rico (Atleticos), Taiwan (Dacin Tigers and Fubon Braves) and NBA (Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies).
Mayo could be described:
(by Borko Popic for in 2008)

Has an uncanny ability to make difficult shots with defenders draped all over him. Crafty ball handler who is very confident dribbling against pressure and trapping defenses. Knows how to use his body when getting to the hoop, shielding the ball and making it difficult to contest his drives. Has a variety of jerky moves and fakes that create enough separation allowing him to get his shot off against even the top defenders.

His first step is lacking in explosiveness and he does not have the greatest ability to turn the corner, as a result he rarely blows by defenders and is forced into shooting tough and contested shots too often
