Guangdong Southern Tigers held off Liaoning Flying Leopards in the championship series opener. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Flying Leopards won third quarter 26-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Guandong Tigers dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Flying Leopards’ 32. 25 personal fouls committed by Flying Leopards helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of American swingman Sonny Weems (198-86, college: Arkansas) who helped to win the game recording 22 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. The former international Peng Zhou (206-89) contributed with 18 points for the winners. American point guard Kyle Fogg (190-90, college: Arizona) answered with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists and the former international Ailun Guo (188-93) added 20 points and 4 assists in the effort for Flying Leopards. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game.
